Professor Schiwy is interested in processes of decolonization. She focuses on the way power and knowledge are constituted and contested through diverse media and on how constructions of race and gender play themselves out in these processes. She is currently working on a book project titled “Broadcasting Dissent.” The book examines the notion of the political in light of contemporary debates in cultural theory and community media in Oaxaca, Mexico and Bolivia. Freya Schiwy is author of Indianizing Film: Decolonization, the Andes, and the Question of Technology. Rutgers UP, 2009. She has co-edited a special issue of the journal Social Identities titled Digital Media, Cultural Production, and Speculative Capitalism, 2009; the book Indisciplinar las ciencias sociales, Quito 2002; and a dossier on the geopolitics of knowledge in Nepantla.
